Concrete Core Drilling
Core drilling puts a clean, precisely located round hole through concrete, masonry or stone — for plumbing, conduit, ductwork, fibre, anchors, dowels or test cores. It is a small-sounding service that holds up large schedules, because the trade waiting on the penetration usually cannot start without it.
What the job covers
- Holes through slabs, walls, foundations and footings, from small conduit up to large service penetrations
- Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, fibre and sprinkler penetrations
- Anchor and dowel holes for structural connections
- Test cores for laboratory analysis and thickness verification
- Angled and overhead coring
- Rebar scanning before drilling where hitting steel is not an option
- Water and slurry controlled and recovered on finished floors
What affects the quote
- Diameter, depth and how many holes — setup dominates the cost on small quantities
- Reinforcement in the path, and whether the hole can be moved if steel is found
- Access and working position — overhead and confined-space coring is slower
- Whether water can be used, or whether dry coring with dust extraction is required
- Locating services before drilling, which on an occupied building is essential
- Hours available where the noise reaches occupied space

Before you call
Can you drill without hitting rebar?
The path can be scanned first and the hole positioned to miss the steel, which is the right approach wherever the location has any tolerance. Where it does not, a core bit will cut through reinforcement, but on a structural element that should be agreed with the engineer rather than decided at the drill.
Will it make a mess of the floor below?
Not if it is set up properly. Water is contained and vacuum-recovered at the drill, and a catch is set below for through-holes. That setup is standard on any occupied or finished building.
